Exploring Meal Worms with Art

'Exploring Meal Worms with Art'
Exploring Meal Worms with Art Kingsley Written by: Teresa July 2015 Dear Kingsley last month Tina spoke about how you are engaged in the di?erent learning opportunities in either individual or small groups, and where you are becoming a young entomologist in your research within this investigation. This month I wanted to share how you expressed your ideas and interpretations of the Meal worms using the medium of Art. Kingsley, on this occasion you were ready to express your ideas of the movements of the meal worm! You started o? by examining the meal worm on the piece of paper where Tina had moved some from the plastic container where they live and I instantly saw you reaching out your hand wanting to hold the meal worm; demonstrating your con?dence and revisiting an experience you have already had. Kingsley, you were very focused observing and examining how the meal worm maneuvered around on the piece of paper, and every now and then you would look up to Tina to check with her. Tina pointed out the legs on the meal worm, where you tried to examine it very closely. Kingsley, Tina then o?ered some paint and paper for you to express your feeling, thoughts and ideas about the Meal worm. Kingsley, you were very interested in the way the meal worm was moving around the paper, and this could been seen in your art piece. Every time you made a marking on your art piece you would point to the Meal worm acknowledging its movements to Tina. Every now and then I noticed Ryder was observing what you were contributing towards your art piece. “Each child is unique and the protagonist of his or her own growth. Children desire to acquire knowledge, have much capacity for curiosity and amazement, and yearn to create relationships with others and communicate “ (Loris Malaguzzi) Teacher re?ection Kingsley, you have the con?dence and ability in expressing your thoughts and feelings e?ectively and appropriately. You convey and explore ideas, materials, and the environment through the arts, with increasing purpose, and accuracy; which enables you to discover di?erent ways to communicate. Kingsley by revisiting previous experiences you are generating and exploring ideas in creative ways, individually and in groups, provides opportunities for purposeful contributions (Ministry of Education, 1996). I am looking forward to seeing how Kingsley theories evolve over time!
