2、hangesinthecinematicremappingofTaipeiinthe1990s,thispaperattemptstoextendourunderstandingofthisglobalcitybeyondJamesonstropeofmodernization.AsinJamesonsfamouspiece,IwillstartwithadiscussionofdirectorEdwardYang,butIwillrecontextualizeYangsrecentfilmsinglobalculturalhybridization.Tobettersituaterecent
3、cinematicchanges,IwillalsomentioncertainearlyfilmssetinTaipei.Generallyspeaking,wemaydistinguishthreephasesofcinematicmappingsofTaipei.First,inthe1960sand1970s,thecitywasconfiguredasaniconofurbanmodernitysoastosupporttheNationalistgovernmentsdrivetobuildTaiwanaspartofamodernChinesenation.Second,inth
4、e1980s,TaipeiwasrefiguredinNewTaiwanCinemaasasiteofdistinctTaiwanexperience,asiteofculturalhybridizationwheretheChineseisshowntobemerelyoneamongmanycompetingculturalforcesintheformationofTaiwanidentity.Third,innew1urbanfilmsofthe1990s,theearlierfocusonTaiwangraduallyfaded,andTaipeihasbeentransfigure
5、dasaseriesofheterotopia,s,whereawiderangeofpostmodernspacesare(re)imaginedand(re)negotiated.ThechangefromChinatoTaiwantoTaipeiincinematicfigurationsofTaipeiseemstodovetailthegeneralmovementfrommodernizationandnationalizationtoglobalizationandhybridizationintheageoftransnationalcapitalism.ButwhetherT
