2、heemptychairinthischamber,andweprayforthehealthofourcolleague--andourfriend-–GabbyGiffords.(Applause.)It’snosecretthatthoseofusheretonighthavehadourdifferencesoverthelasttwoyears.Thedebateshavebeencontentious;wehavefoughtfiercelyforourbeliefs.Andthat’sagoodthing.That’swhatarobustdemocracydemands.
3、That’swhathelpssetusapartasanation.Butthere’sareasonthetragedyinTucsongaveuspause.Amidallthenoiseandpassionandrancorofourpublicdebate,Tucsonremindedusthatnomatterwhoweareorwherewecomefrom,eachofusisapartofsomethinggreater-–somethingmoreconsequentialthanpartyorpoliticalpreference.WearepartoftheAme
4、ricanfamily.Webelievethatinacountrywhereeveryraceandfaithandpointofviewcanbefound,wearestillboundtogetherasonepeople;thatwesharecommonhopesandacommoncreed;thatthedreamsofalittlegirlinTucsonarenotsodifferentthanthoseofourownchildren,andthattheyalldeservethechancetobefulfilled.That,too,iswhatsetsus
5、apartasanation.(Applause.)Now,byitself,thissimplerecognitionwon’tusherinaneweraofcooperation.Whatcomesofthismomentisuptous.Whatcomesofthismomentwillbedeterminednotbywhetherwecansittogethertonight,butwhetherwecanworktogethertomorrow.(Applause.)Ibelievewecan.AndIbelievewemust.That’swhatthepeoplewho
6、sentushereexpectofus.Withtheirvotes,they’vedeterminedthatgoverningwillnowbeasharedresponsibilitybetweenparties.NewlawswillonlypasswithsupportfromDemocratsandRepublicans.Wewillmoveforwardtogether,ornotatall-–forthechallengeswefacearebiggerthanparty,andbiggerthanpolitics.Atstakerightnowisnotwhowins
7、thenextelection-–afterall,wejusthadanelection.Atstakeiswhethernewjobsandindustriestakerootinthiscountry,orsomewhereelse.It’swhetherthehardworkandindustryofourpeopleisrewarded.It’swhetherwesustaintheleadershipthathasmad
