5、heoreticalconstructs.Thetopicofthispaperconcernsthewisdomofthismove:Dochainsreallyexist?Aretheyempiricallyindispensableconstructs?Aretheytheoreticallyattractivevehiclesfordescribingandexplainingtheineluctablefactthatnaturallanguagegrammars``displace''expressions?Raisingthesequestionsb

6、etraysthelikelyanswer.Iwillnotdisappoint.Theformoftheargumentisasfollows.Hornstein(1995,1996a)arguesthatrelativequantifierscopeshouldbetreatedasanA-chainphenomenonratherthananalyzedintermsofA'-movementoperationslikeQuantifierRaising(QR).Theconclusionrestsonseveralpremisesincludingthef
