2、panesebyEnglish-speakingchildren(N=19)atthreedifferentgradelevelsinaJapaneseimmersionprogram.Resultsshowthatboththeirsingletonsandgeminatesweresignificantlylon-gerthanthoseofJapanesemonolingualsandthebilinguals’immer-sionteachers,butalloftheimmersiongroupshaveacquiredt
3、hecontrastbetweenthetwotypesofstop.ThisfindingsupportsFlege’s(1995)hypothesisthataphoneticcategoryestablishedforsecondlanguagesoundsbyabilingualmightdifferfromthatofamonolin-gual.Additionally,52nativespeakersofJapaneseratedthecon-trastbetweenthetwostopsproducedbyalloft
4、hebilingualchildrenandasubsetofthemonolingualchildren.Theaccentratingssug-gestthatthecontrastmadebytheimmersionchildrenwasnotnative-likedespitesomeindividualdifferencesintheirperformanceandthattherewasnostatisticaldifferenceinaccentratingsacrossthegradelevels.Thedegree
