1、PREPARINGFORCOLLEGELincolnSteffensTheyear1884-85wasaperiodofgreatadventureforme.WhenIcameuptoBerkeleyfortheentranceexaminationsattheUniversityofCaliforniaIfailedinGreek,Latin,andwasputoffforayear.Myfatherwasalarmed.Iwaseighteenyearsold,andhethought,thatmyfailurewashisfault:hehadchosenthewrongscho
2、olforme.Hehad,buttherightschoolformedidnotexist.Therewereschoolsthatputboysintothecollegesatayoungeragethanmine.Iknewthoseboyswell.Theyaretheboysthattheschools,colleges,andtheworldaremadefor.OftenIhaveenviedthem;moreoftenIhavebeengladthatIwasnotofthem.Theelectwereboyswhohadbeenbroughtuptodotheird
3、uty.Theymemorizedwhatevertheirteacherstoldthemtolearn.Whethertheywantedtoknowit,whethertheyunderstooditorno,theycouldrememberandreciteit.Theirowndrivingmotiveswere,sofarasIcouldmakeout,notcuriosity;theyrarelytalkedaboutourstudies,andifIspokeoftheimplicationsofsomethingwehadreadorheard,theylookedd
4、azedorindifferent.Theirownmotiveswereforeigntome;tobeattheotherfellows,standhigh,representthehonoroftheschool.Myparentsdidnotbringmeup.Theysentmetoschool,theygavemeteachersofmusic,drawing;theyofferedmeeveryopportunityintheirreach.Butalsotheygavemelibertyandthetoolsofquiteanotherlife:horses,guns,d
5、ogs,andtherangeofanopencountry.Thepeople,thebusinesses,andthedreamsofthislifeinterestedme,andIlearnedwellwhateverinterestedme.SchoolsubjectswhichhappenedtobearonmyoutsideinterestsIstudiedinschoolandout;IreadmorethanIwasrequired,andIreadforkeeps,too.Iknowthesesubjectstothisday,justasIrememberandlo
6、vestillthemenandwomen,theboysandgirls,wholetmebefriendswiththemthenandsorevealedtomesomeofthedepthsandthelimitationsofhumannature.OntheotherhandIcanrememberfewofmyteachersandlittleofthesubjectswhichseemedtomeirrelevanttomylife.Theseothersubjectsareinterestingtome.Noonetriedtointerestmeinthem;they
7、wereputbeforemeasthingsthatIhadtohavetogetintocollege.Theteachersofthemdidnotappealtomycurious,activemind.TheresultwasthatIdidnotreallyworkatthemandsogotonlywhatstuckbydintofrepetition:thebarestrudimentsofaschooleducat
