2、dandaccuracyofprocessinggeometricanalogieswithanalysesofspontaneoushandgesturesthataccompaniedyoungadults’subsequentex-planationsofhowtheysolvedthegeometricanalogytask.Individualswithsuperiorfluidintelligenceprocessedtheanalogiesmoreefficientlythanpar-ticipantswithaveragefluidintelligence.Addit

3、ionally,theyaccompaniedtheirsubsequentexplanationswithmoregesturesexpressingmovementinnon-egocentricperspective.Furthermore,gesturing(butnotspeaking)aboutthemostrelevantaspectofthetaskwasrelatedtohigherfluidintelligence.Withinthegestures-as-simulatedactionframework,theresultssuggestthatindividu

4、alswithsuperiorfluidintelligenceengagemoreinmentalsimulationduringvi-sualimagerythanthosewithaveragefluidintelligence.Thefindingsstresstherelationshipbetweengestureproductionandgeneralcognition,suchasfluidintelligence,ratherthanitsrelationshiptolanguage.Theroleofgesturepro-ductioninthinkingandl

5、earningprocessesisdiscussed.1.IntroductionTheaimofthisstudyistocharacterizetherelationshipofreasoningandges-tureproductionandtheirinteractionwithintelligence.Wefocushereonges-turesproducedbythehandsthatrepresentsemanticcontent,oftencalledrep-resentationalgestures.Forconvenience,wewillrefertothe

6、mas“gestures”.Whenpeopleengageinconversation,gesturesthataccompanyspeecharepartofthecommunicationsystem(Kendon2005;McNeill1992,2005)andtheyreflectthinkingprocesses(Beattie2003;GarberandGoldin-Meadow2002;Goldin-Meadow2003;EmmoreyandCasey2001).Moreover,recentevidencesuggeststhatgesturingplaysacau
