2、andenvironmentalconcernsarechanginghowbuildersandarchitectsselectbuildingmaterialsandhowtheydesignforenergyperformance.Sincetheroofcanbetheleastenergyefficientcomponentofthebuildingenvelope,“coolroofing”hascometotheforefront.Buildersandarchitectsarenowlearninghowadvancesincoatingsandfinishe

3、shavequalifiedmetalroofingasarecognized“coolroofing”product.Reflectiveorcoolroofscandirectlysaveupto40%inenergycostsbyloweringbuildingenvelopecoolingloads.Coolmetalroofingisavailablewithseveraldifferenttreatments,rangingfromunpaintedmetaltooven-bakedpaintedfinishestogranular-coatedsurfaces.

4、Reflectedsolarenergyallowsthemetalroofsurfacetoremaincooler,whichmeanslessheatistransferredintothebuildingandthuslessheatingloadfortheHVACsystem.Coolmetalroofingisonewaytomitigatetheurbanheatislandeffect.Roofswithhigherreflectancehavelowersurfacetemperatures,whichhelpreduceambientairtempera

5、tures.Thisimprovesairqualitysincelesssmogisformed.Also,airpollutionassociatedwithburningfossilfuelsatutilityplantsisreducedbecauseoflesspeakloaddemand.Inadditiontobeingenergyefficient,metalroofingisasustainablebuildingmaterialforseveralotherenvironmentalreasons.Asa“green”buildingproduct,met

6、alroofingisrightfullybecomingmorepopularinthearchitecturalcommunity.INTRODUCTION1AccordingtotheUnitedStatesDepartmentofEnergy(DOE),thereareover80millionbuildingsintheUS,andanother38millionareexpectedtobebuiltbytheyear2020.TheDOEalsoreportsthatbuildingsuse2/3ofalltheelectricityand1/3ofallpri

7、maryenergyconsumedinthecountry.Thechallengetotheconstructionindustryistobuildthesestructuressmartertoreducetheimpactonourenvironmentandtoreduceenergyconsumption.Inmanycases,thetypeofroofsystemonabuildingcanhaveasignificantimpactontheenergyuseofabuildingi
