He spent very little time at school, perhaps no morethan a year in all. 他在学校读书的时间很短,可能总共还不到一年。 1) no more than (only) 仅仅,不过。例如:He had walked no more than two miles when he felt tired again. 他走不过二英里就又累了。not more than≠no more than意为“不比……多”,“不超过”,只有比较的意思, 没有仅仅的意思。例如:There were not more than 20/2000 people in the hall.大厅里人数不超过20/2000。(只表达实际情况,数量可能多也可能少)。There were no more than 20 people and the hall was almost empty. 大厅里只有20人, 几乎是空的。(不仅表达数目,还有仅仅的意思。) 2) in all (altogether) 总共。例如:He has collected 2000 stamps in all. 他总共收集了2千张邮票。There are thirty six classes in all in our school. 我们学校总计有36个班。 Language Points3.In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States. 1860年亚伯拉罕·林肯成为美国总统。注意这个句子中 President 前不加冠词。当表示某人的官衔或职位的名词作表语、同位语、宾语补足语、主语补足语时,前面不用冠词。例如:Comrade Zhang was chairman of the meeting. 张同志是会议主席。Mr. Li,dean of English department, left for Australia. 李先生,英语系主任,出发去澳大利亚了。We chose Wang Ying monitor. 我们选王英当班长。The national hero was made king. 那位民族英雄当了国王。*当这类名词作主语或宾语时,前面可用冠词。例如:The secretary of the Party branch gave the monitor some good advice. 党支部书记给班长提了一些忠告。 Language Points 4.The whole country was very sad at the news of his death. 听到他去世的消息,全国人民都很悲痛。1) at 表示引起某种情绪变化的原因时, 意思是“听到(或看到)……(而)……”。例如:She was surprised at what he had said.对于他所讲的那番话,她感到吃惊。He was very angry at losing the chance.由于失去了这个机会,他非常生气。 The teacher was glad at our progress. 老师对我们的进步很高兴。2)at……=seeing……, at the sight of /hearing 例如:At the sight of /seeing his mother, the child was very pleased. 看到妈妈,孩子很高兴。Hearing the news, all of us were angry. 听到这个消息, 我们都很生气。 Language Points 5. last vi. (go on, continue) 持续, 耐久,维持。例如: How long did the concert last?
