1、METHOD9071Bn-HEXANEEXTRACTABLEMATERIAL(HEM)FORSLUDGE,SEDIMENT,ANDSOLIDSAMPLES1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Method9071maybeusedtoquantifylowconcentrationsofoilandgreaseinsoil,sediments,sludges,andothersolidmaterialsamenabletochemicaldryingandsolventextractionwithn-hexane.Oilandgreaseisaconventiona
2、lpollutantunder40CFR401.16andgenerallyreferstosubstances,includingbiologicallipidsandmineralhydrocarbons,thathavesimilarphysicalcharacteristicsandcommonsolubilityinanorganicextractingsolvent.Assuch,oilandgreaseisanoperationallydefinedparameter,andtheresultswilldependentirelyontheextractingso
3、lventandmethodofextraction.Method9071employsn-hexaneastheextractionsolventwithSoxhletextractionandtheresultsofthismethodareappropriatelytermedn-hexaneextractablematerial(HEM).Section1.2liststhetypeofmaterialsthatmaybeextractedbythismethod.Inthecontextofthismethod,HEMisusedthroughoutthismetho
4、dandforoperationalpurposes,maybeconsideredsynonymouswithoilandgreasewithinthelimitationsdiscussedbelow.1.2Specifically,Method9071issuitableforextractingrelativelynon-volatilehydrocarbons,vegetableoils,animalfats,waxes,soaps,greases,biologicallipids,andrelatedmaterials.1.3Method9071isnotrecom
5、mendedformeasuringmaterialsthatvolatilizeattemperaturesbelow85EC.Petroleumfuelsfromgasolinethrough#2fueloilmaybepartiallylostduringthesolventremovalprocess.1.4Somecrudeoilsandheavyfueloilsmaycontainmaterialsthatarenotsolubleinn-hexane,andrecoveryofthesematerialsmaybelow.2.0SUMMARYOFMETHOD2.1
6、Arepresentativeportionofwet(asreceived)wasteisacidifiedwithconcentratedHClandchemicallydriedwithmagnesiumsulfateorsodiumsulfate.Magnesiumsulfatemonohydrateisusedtodryacidifiedsludgesasitwillcombinewith75%ofitsownweightinwaterinformingMgSO4C7H2O.Anhydroussodiumsulfateisusedtodrysoilandsedimen
