7、乐，也给一些规模较小的音乐组合作曲，他还写一些电影插曲。他小时候就显示出了音乐才能，并在4岁时开始学钢琴。从1978年到1983年，他就读于中央音乐学院。毕业后，他作为一名讲师在那儿工作。1985年，在北京举办了叶小纲的交响音乐会。从那时起，他就成了中国古典音乐现代作曲家的领军人物之一。1986年，他发行了专辑《地平线》，他的音乐在香港第一届中国现代作曲家音乐节上被演奏。他因为把中国传统音乐与西方音乐形式及器乐曲谱写结合起来而出名。叶小纲是北京音乐团“Eclipse”的一员。“Eclipse”大概是中国第一个由现代作曲家演奏作品的独立的音乐团体。
