3、components.Asfarastheautomateddesignofsuchsystemsisconcerned,methodsfordesigningtimereducingandlimitingthecomplexityofthetaskaresoughtoutandapplied.Amethodofthekindisconnectedwiththedecompositionandhierarchyprinciples.Thedecompositionofthesystemsisrealizedinaway,whichdifferentiatesfunc

4、tionallyindependentmodules.Adigitalsystemcanbedescribedasamodulewithinputsand/oroutputs.Theelectricalvaluesontheoutputsaresomefunctionofthevaluesontheinputs.Onewayofdescribingthefunctionofamoduleistodescribehowitiscomposedofsub-modules.Eachofthesub-modulesisaninstanceofsomeentity,andth

5、eportsoftheinstancesareconnectedusingsignals.Thiskindofdescriptioniscalledastructuraldescription.Inmanycases,itisnotappropriatetodescribeamodulestructurally.Onesuchcaseisamodule,whichisatthebottomofthehierarchyofsomeotherstructuraldescription.Forexample,ifyouaredesigningasystemusingICp

6、ackagesboughtfromanICshop,youdonotneedtodescribetheinternalstructureofanIC.Insuchcases,adescriptionofthefunctionperformedbythemoduleisrequired,withoutreferencetoitsactualinternalstructure.Suchadescriptioniscalledafunctionalorbehavioraldescription.Usually,forstructuralandbehavioraldescr
