Unit 1:The Art of Saying GoodbyeJeffrey PeltierChristmas Eve is here, relatives and friends have arrived or will be arriving. We'll greet them with such joy and happiness, looking forward to the time togethe匚 However, what about that moment we don^t dare think about yet. Dare we even mention the word “Goodbye,,? I have a charming little friend, 6 year old Melaina. This past year she has taught me how to say Goodbye. It,s not a sad affair with tears and unhappiness. For her it is as important as saying Hi. Each day as I go out to check the mail, take in the trash or come and go, Melaina greets me with a rousing “HI JEFF". Most times Fll go up to her yard (she is not allowed to leave her front yard and walk on the street yet), talk with her and see her latest pony or we just swing together for a few minutes while we talk. She has an infectious smile and sharp wit even at a young age. If I ask her where she got the pretty shirt she is wearing, she JI look at me bright eyed and say “From my closet”. Why didn't I know that, of course shirts come from the closet. When she brings me cookies and I ask where she got them, again the simple response is, “From the overfl One day I will know where all the things in the world come from, but until then I rely on Melaina. All good times have to come to an end, so I bid Melaina farewell. She is never sad or unhappy, she smiles and says in her biggest voice, "BYE JEFF: Not just once, she continues “BYE JEFF5 all the while I am walking away until I am in the house. Without hesitation, I have to join in with multiple "BYE MELAINA". Mine is not quite as big and happy as hers yet, but I am working on it. I always feel just as good leaving as when I first see her smiling face. She wants me to know she is glad I came for a visit and hopes Fll come back again tomorrow・ She doesn^t make the Goodbye a sad time to be dreaded each time we visit. When your Christmas visit comes to an end, whether it be for a few hours or clays, how will you say goodbye. Will it be the dreaded tearful sad goodbye, a hug in silence or will it be the happy, hope you come back again soon, Melaina Style “GOODBYE”. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Safe New Year, BYE BYE BYEUnit 2Why manners matterFriday, July 27, 2007By Jo McKinnonAre manners old-fashioned? Or are they the key to turning toddler-sized Godzillas into civilised human beings? Many people lump together good manners and etiquette, but they are different things.^Etiquette is the rules of behaviour in certain situations, whereas having good manners is showing kindness and consideration to people. Itns about making them feel good about themselves and it makes you feel good, too/1 explains June Dally・Watkins, who has been teaching Australians the courtesies of civilised society for more than 50 years.Dr James Donnelly, head of psychology at the Sydney Children、Hospital at Randwick, views manners as a "lubricant” for social interactions."Manners help us live togethe。省略部分。 with the goathidc strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The cityMs bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. ValentineHs Day around 498 A・D. The Roman "lottery" system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds" mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February 一 ValentineHs Day 一 should be a day for romance・ The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England・ Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois・In Great Britain, Valentine1^ Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of oneus feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending ValentineHs Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s・ In the 1840s, Esther A・ Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America・According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making ValentineMs Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the yea匚(An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)Approximately 85 percent of all valentines arc purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written ValentineMs didnMt begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine、Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A> Howland・ Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap/
