3、likeagent,CV777.Vet.Microbiol.,6:157--165.Sixteen2--3-days-oldcaesarean-derived,colostrum-deprivedpigletswereeachdosedoro-nasallywith2mlofabacteria-freefiltratecontaining104pig-infectious-dosesofCV777.Thepigletswerekilledatintervalsof12to120hafterinfection.Thecoro-n
4、avirus-likeagentcausedalocalinfectionoftheintestinaltractwhichresultedinvillousatrophy,malabsorptionanddiarrhea.Thepathogenesisofthisinfectionwassimilartothatoftransmissiblegastroenteritis(TGE),aknowncoronaviralinfectionofpigs.However,thereweresomedifferences.Byimmu
5、nofluorescentstaining,CV777antigenswerenotonlydetectedintheepithelialcellscoveringthesmallintestinalvilli,butalsointhecellsofthecolonicsurfaceepithelium.Occasionalfluorescencewasalsoseeninthesmallintestinalcryptepithelium,buttheregenerativecapacityofthecryptswasnota
6、ffected.TheprogressofintestinalepithelialcellinfectionbyCV777wasmuchslowerthanthatinTGE,resultinginalongerincubationperiodandinlessdrasticepithelialcelldestruction.TheinfectionofregeneratingcellsoccurredtoamuchhigherdegreeduringthelatestageofaCV777infectionthanhasbe
7、enobservedinTGE.INTRODUCTIONVirusescommonlyassociatedwithdiarrheainpigsaretransmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV),amemberoftheCoronaviridae,andtheporcinerotavirus.Thepathogenesisoftheintestinalinfectionduetothesevirusesiswelldocumented(HooperandHaelterman,1966,1969;
