2、,U.S.A.(Accepted26October1988)SUMMARYThehaemagglutininmoleculeonthebovineentericcoronavirushasbeenidentifiedasaglycoproteinof140Kcomposedofdisulphide-linkedsubunitsof65K.Inthisstudy,wehaveshownthesubunitstobeidenticalbydemonstratinganunambiguousamino-terminalaminoacidsequence.Theunglycosyla

3、tedsubunitwasfoundtohaveanMrof42.5Kandtoundergorapiddisulphidelinkageandglycosylation.Glycosylationwasfoundtobeoftheasparagine-linkedtypeandsomeoftheoligosaccharidesunderwentprocessingtocomplexforms.Studieswithinhibitorsofglycosylationsuggestedthataprocessingofthehaemagglutininoligosacchari

4、detakesplaceonthevirionwhilstitisintheGolgiapparatus.Eachhaemagglutininsubunitonthematurevirionwasestimatedtopossesssixorsevencarbohydratechainsofeitherthehigh-mannoseorhybridtype,andthreeorfourchainsofthecomplextype.INTRODUCTIONCoronaviruseshavebeengenerallydescribedaspossessingthreestruct

5、uralproteins:aphosphorylatednucleocapsidprotein(N)of50Kto60K,aglycosylatedmatrix-likeprotein(MorEl)of23Kto29K,andaglycosylatedpeplomericprotein(PorE2)of150Kto200K,thatinmanycasesisproteolyticallycleavedintotwosubunitsofroughlyequalsize(forreview,seeSiddelletal.,1982).Recently,afourthstructu

6、ralproteinhasbeendescribedasapartofthemammaliancoronavirusesthathaemagglutinate.Thesecoronavirusesincludethebovineentericcoronavirus(BCV)(King&Brian,1982),thehumanrespiratorycoronavirusOC43(Hogue&Brian,1986)andtheporcinehaemagglutinatingencephalomyelitisvirus(Callebaut&Pensaert,1980).Thefou
