4、significantpercentageofconfirmedsevereacuterespiratorysyndrome(SARS)patientsexperiencedgastrointestinalsymptoms,andtheviralsequencewasdetectableinthestoolofmostpatients.Atpresent,theknowledgeofthepathologyofthedigestivesysteminSARSpatientsislimited.BecausearesurgenceoftheSARSepidemic

5、isconstantlypossible,thereisanurgentneedtounderstandtheinvolvementofthedigestivesysteminthisnewdisease.METHODS:WeperformedsevenSARSautopsiesinwhichsamplesofalimentarytractanddigestiveglandswereexaminedwithroutinepathology,electronmicroscopy(EM),insituhybridization(ISH),immunohistoc

6、hemistry,andreal-timepolymerasechainreaction(PCR).RESULTS:Themainhistopathologicalfindingwasatrophyofthemucosallymphoidtissue.AfewmucosalepithelialcellsandlymphocytesintheintestinewerepositivelystainedforcoronaviruswithISH.SARS-coronavirus(CoV)-likeparticleswerefoundinthemucosalepit

7、helialcellsunderEMandmildfocalinflammationwasdetectedinthealimentarytract.Onepatientwhoexperiencedseverediarrheahadpseudomembranousenteritisoftheileum.Fattydegenerationandcentrallobularnecrosiswereobservedintheliver.Noevidenceofdirectviralinfectionwasfoundintheesophagus,thestomach,t
