3、erienceabroad,notamemberofanyChinesenationalacademies.Malariaresearch- artemisininArtemisinin,adrugthathassignificantlyreducedthedeathrateofmalariapatients,andsavedmillionsoflivesacrosstheglobe,especiallyinthedevelopingcountry.TustartedhermalariaresearchinChinawhentheCulturalRevolutionwasi
4、nprogress.Inearly1969,Tuwasappointedastheheadoftheproject,namedProject523researchgroupatherinstitute.Sheandhercolleaguesexperimentedwith380extractsin2,000candidaterecipesbeforetheyfinallysucceeded.In1971,TuwasinspiredbymanyancientclassicworksonTCM.Usingapioneeringlow-temperaturemethod,Tuan
5、dherteamfirstextractedartemisininfromasweetwormwoodplant(青蒿).Forthesakeofdrugsafety,shehadpersonallytakingtests，whichledtoherliverpoisoning,butshestillkeptonworking,regardlessofpickingsamplesinthewild,orintheindoorexperimentstudy.InspirationAchievingmodernizationofTCMthroughscienceandtechn
