3、nglandcommunity.HerfatherwaselectedarepresentativetoCongressandservedasTreasurerofAmherstCollege.FortwoyearsshestudiedatAmherstAcademyandspentonemoreattheMountHolyokeFemaleSeminary,whereshestudiedamoderncurriculumofEnglishandthescience,aswellasPhilosophy,Latin,botanyandmathematics.Theschoolwas
4、stronglyCongregational,butEmilyrefusedtoobserveitsreligiouscustoms.ExceptforavisittoWashington,D.C.,shespentherentirelifeinAmherst.Shestayedquietlyathome,thelast25yearsintotalseclusion.Shenevermarried.Inherfamilylibrary,shehadaccesstomanyreligiousworksaswellasbooksbyEmerson,othertranscendental
5、istsandcurrentmagazines.PoemsbyEmilyDickinsonpublishedin1890,altogether1775poems.Onlysevenofherpoemspublishedwhenshewasalive.Whyonlysevenofherpoemspublishedwhenshewasalive?ShesentpoemstoThomasWentworthHigginson,aliterarycriticandfamilyfriend.Herecognizedhertalent,buttriedto“improve”them,whichm
