2、hesiveandnon-cohesivesoils.Earthquakeeffectsareconsideredinanapproximatemannerintermsofseismiccoe$cient-dependentforces.Twokindsoffailuresurfacesareconsideredinthisstudy:aplanarfailuresurface,andacircularfailuresurface.Theproposedmethodcanbeviewedasanextensionofthemethodofslices,butitprovidesamo

3、reaccurateetreatmentoftheforcesbecausetheyarerepresentedinanintegralform.Thefactorofsafetyisobtainedbyusingtheminimizationtechniqueratherthanbyatrialanderrorapproachusedcommonly.Thefactorsofsafetyobtainedbytheanalyticalmethodarefoundtobeingoodagreementwiththosedeterminedbythelocalminimumfactor-o

6、ces,whichwasextendedtoanalysisofslopesin1820byFrancais.Byabout1840,experiencewithcuttingsandembankmentsforrailwaysandcanalsinEnglandandFrancebegantoshowthatmanyfailuresurfacesinclaywerenotplane,butsigni"cantlycurved.In1916,curvedfailuresurfaceswereagainreportedfromthefailureofquaystructuresinSwe
