3、ofthemethodofslices,butitprovidesamoreaccurateetreatmentoftheforcesbecausetheyarerepresentedinanintegralform.Thefactorofsafetyisobtainedbyusingtheminimizationtechniqueratherthanbyatrialanderrorapproachusedcommonly.Thefactorsofsafetyobtainedbytheanalyticalmethodarefoundtobeingoo

6、ulombin1773.Hissolutionapproachforearthpressuresagainstretainingwallsusedplaneslidingsurfaces,whichwasextendedtoanalysisofslopesin1820byFrancais.Byabout1840,experiencewithcuttingsandembankmentsforrailwaysandcanalsinEnglandandFrancebegantoshowthatmanyfailuresurfacesinclaywerenot
