5、eviewsummarizesthecognitive,emotional,andbehavioralconsequencesofexposuretoextremeenvironments,discussespredictorsofperformance,andbuildsacasefortheuseofneuroscienceapproachestoquantifyandunderstandoptimalcognitiveandbehavioralperformance.Extremeenvironmentsaredefinedasanexternalcontextthatexp
6、osesindividualstodemandingpsychologicaland/orphysicalconditions,andwhichmayhaveprofoundeffectsoncognitiveandbehavioralperformance.Examplesofthesetypesofenvironmentsincludecombatsituations,Olympic-levelcompetition,andexpeditionsinextremecold,athighaltitudes,orinspace.Optimalperformanceisdefined
7、asthedegreetowhichindividualsachieveadesiredoutcomewhencompletinggoal-orientedtasks.Itishypothesizedthatindividualvariabilitywithrespecttooptimalperformanceinextremeenvironmentsdependsonawell“contextualized”internalbodystatethatisassoci
