2、rnuclear~ytoplasmratio)sothatunderbalancedgrowthconditionsaconstantaveragecellsizeismaintainedoversucceedinggenerations.Thisregulationisprobablyeffectedbyalterationsinthetimingofmitosisand/orcelldivision.Generalcriteriaareestablishedtowhichanymodelmustconformwhichdescribestheregula
3、tionofcellsizeandmitosis.Itisarguedthatseveralpublishedmodelsareinconsistentwiththesecriteria.Fourgeneralclassesofmodelarepresentedwhichagreewiththesecriteria.Possibleunderlyingbiologicalbasesforthemodelsarediscussed.Mathematicaldescriptionsofeachmodelhavebeenformulatedallowingquan
4、titativeanalysisoftheirregulatoryproperties.Differentkindsofperturbationstoasteady-statecellwithequilibriumnuclear-cytoplasmicratiohaverevealeddifferentbutcharacteristicresponsemodesfordifferentmodels-immediateorasymptoticoroscillatoryapproachbacktoequilibrium.Themodelsarevalidford
5、ifferentgrowthratesandgrowthmodes.Experimentsaresuggestedwhichshouldallowthegeneralvalidityofeachmodeltobedetermined.Anexaminationofpresentavailabledatadoesnotallowaclearevaluationofanyofthemodelssincefaircomparisonbetweenpredictionandexperimentisonlyvalidunderrigorouslydefinedexpe
