3、aluecreationisalsochangingandinawaythatmakesclearstrategicthinkingsimultaneouslymoreimportantandmoredifficult.Ourtraditionalthinkingaboutvalueisgroundedintheassumptionsandthemodelofanindustrialeconomy.Accordingtothisview,everycompanyoccupiesapositiononavaluechain.Upstream,su

4、ppliersprovideinputs.Thecompanythenaddsvaluetotheseinputs,beforepassingthemdownstreamtothenextactorinthechain,thecustomer(whetheranotherbusinessorthefinalconsumer).Seenfromthisperspective,strategyisprimarilytheartofpositioningacompanyintherightplaceonthevaluechain-therightbu

5、siness,therightproductsandmarketsegments,therightvalueaddingactivities.Today,however,thisunderstandingofvalueisasoutmodedastheoldassemblylinethatitresemblesandsoistheviewofstrategythatgoeswithit.Globalcompetition,changingmarkets,andnewtechnologiesareopeningupqualitativelynew
