2、isiscarriedoutbyusingsimplesingle-equationmodelsfocusingonsubstitutionofdemand.Commonpracticetherebyistoconcentrateonthecalculationoftheelasticityofsubstitutionbetweentwoexporters(usuallythecountryconcernedandagroupofcompetitors)inathirdmarket,simplybytak
3、ingthequotientoftheexportdemandequationsforthetwoexporters.Insuchaframeworkcompetitivenessiscruciallylinkedwithrelativeprices.Reality,however,isfarmorecomplicated.Thesingle-equationmodelsthereforehavebeensubjecttoseverecriticismfortheirsimplicityandtheapr
4、ioriassumptionswhichhavetobemade.Mostcriticismswereofaneconometricnature(startingfromOrcutt,1950);however,theoreticaldoubtshavebeenexpressedaswell.Thisresultedinsomeextensionsofthemodel,e.g.theintroductionofsupplyfactors,theincorporationofnon-pricefactors
5、,andtheimpactofthebusinesscycle.Ageneralweaknessofthetraditionaltrademodelsisstilllackofattentiontotheimpactofthedifferencesinthecompositionoftheexportsbetweencompetingcountriesontheirrelativeexportperformance.NeverthelessTyszynski(1951)didseparatetheimpa
6、ctofthecompositionofexportsandcompetitivenessonexportperformance;othersfollowed,butthepreciserelationshipbetweenthecompositionofexportsandcompetitivenessremainedunclear.ThemajorcontributiontothisissuehasbeenmadebyOoms(1967),butreceivedlittleattention.Also
7、hardlyanyattentionhasbeengiventothepolicyimplicationsofthemodels.Thepresentpapertriestoindicatehowthecompositionofexportsisrelatedtoexportperformance,bothdirectlyandviathe(other)factorsdeterminingtheexports,andcanbeconsideredanextensionoftheOomsmodelinsom
