2、siscarriedoutbyusingsimplesingle-equationmodelsfocusingonsubstitutionofdemand.Commonpracticetherebyistoconcentrateonthecalculationoftheelasticityofsubstitutionbetweentwoexporters(usuallythecountryconcernedandagroupofcompetitors)inathirdmarket,simplybytakin
3、gthequotientoftheexportdemandequationsforthetwoexporters.Insuchaframeworkcompetitivenessiscruciallylinkedwithrelativeprices.Reality,however,isfarmorecomplicated.Thesingle-equationmodelsthereforehavebeensubjecttoseverecriticismfortheirsimplicityandtheaprior
4、iassumptionswhichhavetobemade.Mostcriticismswereofaneconometricnature(startingfromOrcutt,1950);however,theoreticaldoubtshavebeenexpressedaswell.Thisresultedinsomeextensionsofthemodel,e.g.theintroductionofsupplyfactors,theincorporationofnon-pricefactors,and
5、theimpactofthebusinesscycle.Ageneralweaknessofthetraditionaltrademodelsisstilllackofattentiontotheimpactofthedifferencesinthecompositionoftheexportsbetweencompetingcountriesontheirrelativeexportperformance.NeverthelessTyszynski(1951)didseparatetheimpactoft
6、hecompositionofexportsandcompetitivenessonexportperformance;othersfollowed,butthepreciserelationshipbetweenthecompositionofexportsandcompetitivenessremainedunclear.ThemajorcontributiontothisissuehasbeenmadebyOoms(1967),butreceivedlittleattention.Alsohardly
7、anyattentionhasbeengiventothepolicyimplicationsofthemodels.Thepresentpapertriestoindicatehowthecompositionofexportsisrelatedtoexportperformance,bothdirectlyandviathe(other)factorsdeterminingtheexports,andcanbeconsideredanextensionoftheOomsmodelinsomerespec
