4、omparisonpurposeshisindependentEnglishtranslationoftheoriginalGermanmonograph.NathanMorriaonPREFACEThepurposeofthismonographistogiveanaxiomaticfoundationforthetheoryofprobability.Theauthorsethimselfthetaskofputtingintheirnaturalplace,amongthegeneralnotionsofmodernmathemat
5、ics,thebasicconceptsofprobabilitytheory-conceptswhichuntilrecentlywereconsideredtobequitepeculiar.ThistaskwouldhavebeenaratherhopelessonebeforetheintroductionofLebesgue'stheoriesofmeasureandintegration.However,afterLebesgue'spublicationofhisinvestigations,theanalogiesbetw
6、eenmeasureofasetandprobabilityofanevent,andbetweenintegralofafunctionandmathematicalexpectationofarandomvariable,becameapparent.Theseanalogiesallowedoffurtherextensions;thus,forexample,variouspropertiesofindependentrandomvariableswereseentobeincompleteanalogywiththecorres
7、pondingpropertiesoforthogonalfunctions.Butifprobabilitytheorywastobebasedontheaboveanalogies,itstillwasnecessarytomakethetheoriesofmeasureandintegrationindependentofthegeometricelementswhichwereintheforegroundwithLebesgue.ThishasbeendonebyFrechet.Whileaconceptionofprobabi
