4、gyfrommodemscience.Itismostunlikelythatanyoftheseunrelatedexamplesofsuccessfulreductionwillshedlightontherelationofmindtobrain.Butphilosopherssharethegeneralhumanweaknessforexplanationsofwhatisincomprehensibleintermssuitedforwhatisfamiliarandwellunderstood,thoughentirelydifferent.Thishasledtoth

5、eacceptanceofimplausibleaccountsofthementallargelybecausetheywouldpermitfamiliarkindsofreduction.Ishalltrytoexplainwhytheusualexamplesdonothelpustounderstandtherelationbetweenmindandbody--why,indeed,wehaveatpresentnoconceptionofwhatanexplanationofthephysicalnatureofamentalphenomenonwouldbe.With
