3、yproblemunique,andunlikethewater-H2OproblemortheTuringmachine-IBMmachineproblemorthelightning-electricaldischargeproblemorthegene-DNAproblemortheoaktree-hydrocarbonproblem,isignored.Everyreductionisthashisfavoriteanalogyfrommodernscience.Itismostunlikelythatanyoftheseunrelatedexamplesofsuccessfulre
4、ductionwillshedlightontherelationofmindtobrain.Butphilosopherssharethegeneralhumanweaknessforexplanationsofwhatisincomprehensibleintermssuitedforwhatisfamiliarandwellunderstood,thoughentirelydifferent.Thishasledtotheacceptanceofimplausibleaccountsofthementallargelybecausetheywouldpermitfamiliarkind
5、sofreduction.Ishalltrytoexplainwhytheusualexamplesdonothelpustounderstandtherelationbetweenmindandbody—why,indeed,wehaveatpresentnoconceptionofwhatanexplanationofthephysicalnatureofamentalphenomenonwouldbe.Withoutconsciousnessthemind-bodyproblemwouldbemuchlessinteresting.Withconsciousnessitseemshop
