2、forfailingtoexerciseadequateregulatoryoversight.ItseemsthateveryonehasastrongopinionaboutGMfoods.EventheVatican19andthePrinceofWales20haveexpressedtheiropinions.MostconcernsaboutGMfoodsfallintothreecategories:environmentalhazards,humanhealthrisks,andeconomicconcerns.Environmentalhazards·Unintended
3、harmtootherorganismsLastyearalaboratorystudywaspublishedinNature21showingthatpollenfromB.t.corncausedhighmortalityratesinmonarchbutterflycaterpillars.Monarchcaterpillarsconsumemilkweedplants,notcorn,butthefearisthatifpollenfromB.t.cornisblownbythewindontomilkweedplantsinneighboringfields,thecaterp
4、illarscouldeatthepollenandperish.AlthoughtheNaturestudywasnotconductedundernaturalfieldconditions,theresultsseemedtosupportthisviewpoint.Unfortunately,B.t.toxinskillmanyspeciesofinsectlarvaeindiscriminately;itisnotpossibletodesignaB.t.toxinthatwouldonlykillcrop-damagingpestsandremainharmlesstoallo
5、therinsects.ThisstudyisbeingreexaminedbytheUSDA,theU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)andothernon-governmentresearchgroups,andpreliminarydatafromnewstudiessuggeststhattheoriginalstudymayhavebeenflawed22,23.Thistopicisthesubjectofacrimoniousdebate,andbothsidesoftheargumentaredefendingtheirdatavi
6、gorously.Currently,thereisnoagreementabouttheresultsofthesestudies,andthepotentialriskofharmtonon-targetorganismswillneedtobeevaluatedfurther.·ReducedeffectivenessofpesticidesJustassomepopulationsofmosquitoesdevelopedresistancetothenow-bannedpesticideDDT,manypeopleareconcernedthatinsectswillbecome
