2、oserthesecondlanguageistothefirstlanguage,theeasieritis.Theeffectsplayedbythefirstlanguagedoexistduringthecoursewhenlearnersacquiretheirsecondlanguage.Therelationbetweenthefirstlanguageandthesecondlanguagehasbeenexploredinthisarticlefromtwoaspects:the

3、possibleeffectsoffirstlanguageorthographicfeaturesinfluencesonwordrecognitionprocessinginEnglishasasecondlanguageandthephonologicalsystemoffirstlanguageconstraintssecondlanguagelearners’abilityofproducethesoundofthetargetlanguageespeciallyintheearlype

4、riodoflearning.Keywords:thefirstlanguage(L1);thesecondlanguage(L2);orthographicfeatures;phonologicalsystem;behavioristlearningtheory.Itispopularbeliefthatsecondlanguageacquisitionisstronglyinfluencedbythelearner’sfirstlanguage.Theroleofthefirstlanguag

5、einthelearningofsecondlanguagedrawsnotonlytheattentionoftheforeignlanguagelearningresearch,butthesecondlanguageteachingresearch.Beebe(1988:15-39)pointsoutthatthereliesthesignificantrelationbetweenthemothertongueandthesecondlanguageandhearguesthatweare

6、inclinedtoassumethatthenearerthesecondlanguageistoourfirstlanguage,theeasieritis.Forexample,aFrenchmanabouttolearnItalianhasaverydifferentcharacterfromthatencounteredbyaHungarianlearnsEnglish.FrenchandItalianarecognateorsisterlanguages;EnglishandHunga

7、rianarenotevenrelativewitheachother.FrenchandItalianareverysimilarinstructure,andbyfarthegreaterpartoftheirvocabulariesbearstrongresemblances.ToacertainextentonemayconcludethatitispossibletospeakandunderstandItalianwhilethinkinginFrench.ComparedwithaF

8、renchlearningItalian,whenaHungarianstudiesEnglish,thereisnopossiblemorphologicalidentityaswellaslexisandsyntaxbetweenHungarianwordsandEnglishwords.Thelongwords,thevariousfunctionsandthegenerallackofanyrecognizablesimilaritiesbetweenthetwolangu
