4、NicolsonBethune,asmalltownpastor,inGravenhurst,Canada.Hehadtwosiblings—asisterJanetandbrotherMalcolm.HeattendedOwenSoundCollegiateandVocationalInstitute(OSCVI)andgraduatedfromthereintheyear1907.HethenjoinedtheUniversityofTorontoin1909.Hetookone-yearbreakfromstudiesin1911a
5、ndvolunteeredasalaborer-teacherwithFrontierCollege,educatingminelaborerstoreadandwriteEnglish.Heonceagainputhismedicaleducationinholdin1914,whentheFirstWorldWarwasdeclared.Withtheintensefeelofpatriotismfromwithin,hedecidedtojointheNo.2FieldAmbulanceinFranceasstretcherbear
6、er.HehadtospendthreemonthsinanEnglishhospitalashewaswoundedbyshrapnel.Afterrecoveringfrominjuries,hewentbacktoTorontotopursuemedicaleducationandcompletedhisM.D.in1916.HethenjoinedtheRoyalNavyandthenmovedtoCanadianAirForce.Towardsthemid1920s,Normanenrolledformedicalstudies
7、inLondonandEdinburgh,andwaselectedasaFellowoftheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsintheyear1922.Twoyearslater,heopenedupaprivatemedicalpracticeinDetroit,Michigan.Unfortunately,hishealthdeterioratedduringthistime.Hediscoveredthatbothofhislungswereaffectedbytuberculosisandconsultedthef
