1、NormanBethuneNormanBethunewasagreatdoctor,whowastheheroinChina.HewasborninGravenhurst,OntarioonMarch3,1890.HisfatherwasaPresbyterianministerwhohaddescendedfromalonglineofclergymen,educators,andmedicalpractitioners.Hismotherhadbeenanevangelicalmissionary.AfterNormanBethu

2、neleftmedicalschoolattheuniversityofTorontoin1914,heenlistedintheCanadianarmy.Thenin1919,NormanBethunebegananinternshipspecializinginchildren’sdisease.In1922,whilehewasgoingtoEdinburgh,whereheearnedtheFRCSqualificationattheRoyalCollegeofSurgeons,hefellinlovewithastrikin

3、glybeautifulladywhosenamewasFrancesDennyandtheymarriedin1923.Unfortunately,whenhediscoveredhecontractedtuberculosisduetooverworkhedidn’twanttoimplicatehiswife,soheinsistedhisdivorcehimandreturntohernativeScotlandandhiswifeacceptedthisidea.Aswecansee,NormanBethunewasasel

4、flessandthoughtfulman.Next,in1929hewastheassistantofDr.EdwardArchibaldtheCanadianpioneerinthoracicsurgeryatMcGillUniversityinMontrealQuebecfor8years.In1936assoonastheSpanishCivilWarbrokeout,BethuneacceptedaninvitationfromthecommitteetoAidSpanishDemocracytoheadtheCanadia

5、nMedicalUnitinMadrid.Mostimportantly,inJanuary1938BethunejoinedtheChinesetostruggleagainsttheJapaneseinvaders.Sadly,probablyduetohisweakenedstate,NormanBethunecontractedinfectionanddiedofhiswoundsonNovermber12,1939,China.InordertorememberNormanBethune,MaoZedongwhowasthe
