3、lopanefficientandstraightforwardprotocolforDNAextractionandSTRtypingofancientspecimens.ThedevelopedmethodwasvalidatedonmodernandforensicsamplesandthensuccessfullyappliedonancienthairscollectedfromSiberianmummiesdatingfromthe16thtotheearly19thcenturies.Inparallelextractionsincludingorex

4、cludingawashingstepwereperformedatleasttwotimesforeachsampleinordertoevaluatetheinfluenceonthequantityofnuclearDNAyieldedandonthetypingefficiency.Twelveancientindividualswereanalyzedthroughourapproachandfullandreliableprofileswereobtainedforfourofthem.Theseprofileswerevalidatedbycompariso

5、nwiththoseobtainedfromboneandteethDNAextractedfromthesameancientspecimens.ThepresentstudydemonstratesthatthewashingstepcannotbeconsideredasdeleteriousforDNAretrievalsincethesameresultswereobtainedbythetwoapproaches.ThisfindingchallengesthehypothesisthatrecoverablenuclearDNAisonlyfoundo
