4、atfedwithbutyrate(1000mg/L)(305mW/m2or7.6mW/L),demonstratingthatacetateisapreferredaqueoussubstrateforelectricitygenerationinMFCs.Poweroutputasafunctionofsubstrateconcentrationwaswelldescribedbysaturationkinetics,althoughmaximumpowerdensitiesvariedwiththeci

5、rcuitload.Maximumpowerdensitiesandhalf^saturationconstantswerePmax=661mW/m2andKs=141mg/Lforacetate(218Q)andPmax=349mW/m2andKs=93mg/Lforbutyrate(1000Q).Similaropencircuitpotentialswereobtainedinusingacetate(798mV)orbutyrate(795mV).Currentdensitiesmeasuredfor

6、stablepoweroutputwerehigherforacetate(2.2A/m2)thanthosemeasuredinMFCsusingbutyrate(0.77A/m2).Cyclicvoltammogramssuggestedthatthemainmechanismofpowerproductioninthesebatchtestswasbydirecttransferofelectronstotheelectrodebybacteriagrowingontheelectrodeandnotb

7、ybacteria-producedmediators.Coulombicefficienciesandoverallenergyrecoverywere10731and3?7%foracetateand8?15and2?5%forbutyrate,indicatingsubstantialelectronandenergylossestoprocessesotherthanelectricitygeneration.Theseresultsdemonstratethatelectricitygenerati
