2、ngthwasreleasedfromdisruptedparticlesofhumancoronavirusstrain229Eandmousehepatitisvirusstrain3afterincubationinmildconditions.Thehelicalcomplexesappearedtobecomposedofglobularsubunitswithlongaxesof5to7nmsurroundingahollowcoreofdiam.3to4nm.Thecomplexeswereshowntobesensitive

3、tobothpancreaticRNaseandtopronase.Noundegradedinternalcomponentwasobtainedfromdisruptedavianinfectiousbronchitisvirusparticles.WeconcludethatthesestructuresareRNPcomplexes.ThesimilaritybetweentheseRNPsandthoseofotherlargelipidcontainingRNAvirusesisdiscussed.Coronavirusesco

4、mpriseagroupoflipidcontainingRNAvirusesthathavebeenclassifiedtogethermainlyontheiruniquemorphology(Tyrrelletak~975)-Theyappearroughlysphericalwithdiam.rangingfrom80to~2onmandcontaincharacteristicclub-shapedsurfaceprojectionsupto2onminlength(McIntosh,I974).Theenvelopeofthev

5、irusescontainslipidandappearstoconsistofadistinctpairofelectrondenseshells(McIntosh,I974).Nointernalcomponenthasbeenobservedinanynegativelystainedpreparations,althoughahelicalcomponentapparentlyreleasedfromvirionsofthehumancoronavirus,strain229E(HCV229E),hastentativelybeen

6、identifiedaspartoftheribo-nucleoprotein(RNP)complex(Kennedy&Johnson-Lussenburg,I976).ThegenomesofcoronavirusesconsistofasingleRNAmolecule.Thesehavebeenshowntobehighmol.wt.single-strandedRNAmoleculesinthecasesofHCV229E(Macnaughton&Madge,~978),HCVstrainOC43(Tannock&Hierholze

7、r,I977),avianinfectiousbronchitisvirus(IBV)(Watkinsetal.~975;Lomniczi,I977;Macnaughton&Madge,I977a;Schochetmanetal.I977)andtransmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV)(Garwesetal.I975).Furthermore,thegenomesofHCV229EandIBVhavebeenshowntocontaincovalentlyattachedpolyadenylicacid
