2、tmethodsfromaratherbroadperspective.Wewillconsiderthebasictheoryoffiniteelementmethodsasutilizedasanengineeringtool.Likewise,exampleengineeringapplicationswillbepresentedtoillustratepracticalconceptsofheattransfer,stressanalysis,andotherfields.Todaythesubjectoferroranalysisforada

3、ptivityoffiniteelementmethodshasreachedthepointthatitisbotheconomicalandreliableandshouldbeconsideredinanengineeringanalysis.Finally,wewillconsiderinsomedetailthetypicalcomputationalproceduresrequiredtoapplymodernfiniteelementanalysis,andtheassociatederroranalysis.Inthischapterwe

4、willbeginwithanoverviewofthefiniteelementmethod.Wecloseitwithconsiderationofmodernprogrammingapproachesandadiscussionofhowthesoftwareprovideddiffersfromtheauthor'spreviousimplementationsoffiniteelementcomputationalprocedures.Inmodernengineeringdesignitisraretofindaprojectthatdoesn

5、otrequiresometypeoffiniteelementanalysis(FEA).Whennotactuallyrequired,FEAcanusuallybeutilizedtoimproveadesign.ThepracticaladvantagesofFEAinstressanalysisandstructuraldynamicshavemadeittheaccepteddesigntoolforthelasttwodecades.Itisalsoheavilyemployedinthermalanalysis,especiallyin

6、connectionwiththermalstressanalysis.Clearly,thegreatestadvantageofFEAisitsabilitytohandletrulyarbitrarygeometry.Probablyitsnextmostimportantfeaturesaretheabilitytodealwithgeneralboundaryconditionsandtoincludenonhomogeneousandanisotropicmaterials.Thesefeaturesalonemeanthatwecant

7、reatsystemsofarbitraryshapethataremadeupofnumerousdifferentmaterialregions.Eachmaterialcouldhaveconstantpropertiesorthepropertiescouldvarywithspatiallocation.Totheseverydesirablefeatureswecanaddalargeamountoffreedominprescribingtheloadingconditionsandinthepostprocessingofitemss
