2、ganisms.Weshowthatanynon-zerocorrelationthatisduetocell-sizeregulation,nomatterhowsmall,induceslong-termoscillationsinthepopulationgrowthrate.Thepopulationonlyreachesitssteadystatewhenweincludetheoften-neglectedvariabilityinthegrowthratesofindividualcells.Wediscoverthattherelaxationtimescaleo

3、fthepopulationtoitssteadystateisdeterminedbythedistributionofsingle-cellgrowthratesandissurprisinglyindependentofdetailsofthedivisionprocesssuchasthenoiseinthetimingofdivisionandthemechanismofcell-sizeregulation.Wevalidatethepredictionsofourmodelusingexistingexperimentaldataandproposeanexperi

4、mentalmethodtomeasuresingle-cellgrowthvariabilitybyobservinghowlongittakesforthepopulationtoreachitssteadystateorbalancedgrowth.Mostofushaverstcousinsthataremoreorlessglecellgrowthratedistributioncompletelydeterminesourage,buttheagesofourmoredistantcousinsarethetimescalefortherelaxationofthep

5、opulationtoitsmorebroadlydistributed.Thedierencearisesduetosteadystateaswellasthesteadystatepopulationgrowththelargernumberofgenerationssinceourlastcommonrateirrespectiveofthedetailsofcelldivisionprocessandancestorwithourmoredistantcousins.Thenoiseinthecell-sizecontrolmechanism.generationtime
