4、weensoundandmeaning(Hinton1994).Somelinguistsusethebroaderterm‘soundsymbolism’todescribetheChineseonomatopoeia.Onomatopoeia,sheargues,areonlysoundwords.InEnglish,though,onomatopoeiaisusedbothformimesiswordsandthosethatdescribenon-audiblestatesandactionsbymimeti
5、cwords.ThisisadistinctdifferencebetweensoundsymbolisminEnglishandChinese.InEnglish,soundsymbolismisanimportantpartofthelanguage.Itisawell-structuredsoundsymbolicsystem,whereitiseasyforthenativespeakertoguessthemeaningofanewword.InChinese,ontheotherhand,soundsym
