3、odooroverseeingtheeffort,therecamethematterofhowtomotivatethesepeople.Theoldsaying,onecanleadahorsetowaterbutonecannotmakehimdrink,wasandremainsthecruxofthemotivationproblem.Thewhip,thelash,cajolery,persuasion,bribery,promises,pleadings,andnumerousothe
4、rtechniqueshavebeenandarestillbeingusedinanattempttomotivateothers.Yet,despiteourlongconfrontationwiththisproblem,wearestillfarfromunderstandingorknowinghowtomotivateothers.Motivationisamatterfurthercomplicatedbytheparticularperiodoftime,theparticularc
5、ircumstancesandthepar-ticulareconomicconditionssurroundinganact.Underconditionsofprosperityandfullemployment,suchastheU.S.A.hasexperienced,theproblemofmotivatingothersmaybecomeafarmoredifficulttask,particularlyinafreesociety.Itisnotuncommontodaytoheare
6、mployersask:Howdoesonegethisemployeestobegenuinelyconcernedabouttheirwork,totakerealinterestinwhattheyaredoing,toacceptchallenges,totakeprideinwhattheyaredoing,towanttoaccomplishatahighlevel,towanttoassumeresponsibility?Letusbeginbyexaminingtheproblemo
7、fmotivationinanorganizationalsetting,foritisherethatourparticularinterestsaremostconcerned.Analyticallyandforsimplicity'ssake,onecandiscernfivekeyelementswhichplayamajorroleinmotivation.Thesearetheemployer,theemployee,theworkenvironment,thegoalsoftheem
