3、ssedsimilarquestionsevenearlier.Thefactthatovertheyearsnumerousdictionarieshavebeenproducedwithaviewtoexplainingthemeaningofwordsalsobearswitnesstoitslongtradition.Nevertheless,semanticsremainstheleastknownareainlinguistics,comparedwithphonetics,phon
4、ology,morphologyandsyntax.Meaningsof“meaning”Onedifficultyinthestudyofmeaningisthattheword“meaning”itselfhasdifferentmeanings.IntheirbookTheMeaningofMeaningwrittenin1923,C.K.OgdenandI.A.Richardspresenteda“representativelistofthemaindefinitionswhichre
