2、INTRODUCTIONTOTHESTUDY1.1BACKGROUNDOFTHESTUDYInformationhasbecomeaveryimportantresourceineverysectorofoperation,andpeoplerelyonitfortheirfunctioningandlivelihood.Theworkplaceofthepresenttimesandthefuturethereforedemandsanewkindofuniversitygraduate,whoknowswheninformationisneededan
3、dcanaccess,manageandusethevastamountofinformationavailabletohimorherthroughmultiplechannelssuchasphones,Internet,email,printeddocuments,andweb-casts,etc(Cheuk,2002:2).Thesocietyofthe21stCenturydependsonaccesstoanduseofinformationforitsdecisionmaking,growthanddevelopment.Thishasres
4、ultedintoaninformationexplosion,producedinmultiplemedia.However,aspointedoutbytheCouncilofAustralianUniversityLibrarians(CAUL,2001:2),andotherssuchasCouncilofEurope(2010:2)andAqiliandNasiri(2010:453)alotoftheinformationisunfiltered,thusraisingquestionsaboutitsauthenticity,validity
5、andreliability.Thereforepeopleneedspecialskillscalledinformationliteracy(IL),forobtainingthespecificinformationtomeettheirrangeofpersonalandbusinessneeds.Consequently,universitygraduatesneedtobewell-groundedininformationliteracyinordertobepreparedtofacethechallengesoftoday’sworkpl
6、ace,forqualityserviceprovisionandoptimumproduction.Clearlinksbetweeneconomic,socialandpoliticaldevelopmentandinformationliteratesocietiesarenowrecognizedandacceptedtheworldover.Tise(2004:1)pointsoutthat,acomparisonbetweenanysuccessfuleconomyintheworldandthatofanydevelopingcountrye
