OnhowtoimprovespokenEnglish1.IntroductionEnglishisapopularlanguage—especiallyinthenewcentury.Asisknowntousall,itismorewidelyusedlanguageinthedevelopingworld.Nowadaysintheinternationalcommunicationsandcompetitions,personalswithhighabilityofSpoken-Englishhavemoreandmoreimportantposition.InthetraditionalapproachtoEnglishteaching,mostclasstimeisspentwiththeteacher’sinstructingandthestudents’watching,listeningandwriting.Thetrainingofstudents’spokenEnglishisunconsciouslyneglected.Studentseasilybecomepassivereceiversofknowledge.Evenintheclassoflisteningandspeaking,onlyafewstudentscangetoneortwominutestotalkbecauseofthelargeclasswhichoftencontainsmorethan50students.Itisunrealistictoleteverystudentmakeaspeechwithinfortyminutes.Underthissituation,students’opportunitiestouseandpracticeEnglisharelimited.AnotherfactisthatstudentsseldomspeakEnglishafterclass,whichmakestheproblemmoreserious.Languageisforcommunication.OurpurposetolearnEnglishistousethelanguagetoexchangeideas,getinformation,andcommunicatewithothers,etc.butnotjusttopasstheexaminations.2.TheimportantofspokenEnglish2.1TheimportantofspokenEnglishforteachingTeachingisveryimportant,thefinalgoalinspokenEnglishteachingistostudentstospeakEnglishclearly,fluently,accurately,appropriately,andtoimprovethestudents'oralEnglishexpressionandcommunicativecompetence.FormostEnglishlanguagelearnersinChina,Englishspokenbytheirclassroomteachersisthemainsourceoftargetlanguageinput.Englishteachingislinkedtogetherwithknowledgeinclassandoutsideclass.StudentsareactivetospokeEnglishandstudyEnglish,whichistheaimofspokenEnglishteaching.Teachershouldalsoletthestudentsunderstandwhattheyhavelearnfromlisteningtolessonsispassiveand8 takingnotesisnothingbuttheoriesandtheyhaven’tdoneanypracticeyet.2.2TheimportantofspokenEnglishforstudentInclassstudentmustunderstandwhatistheteachersay,thisisveryimportant.Ifstudentcanunderstandwhatisteachersaid,thatcanlearnEnglishwell.TheimprovementofspokenEnglishisgoodforstudent’sreadingandwriting.Andtheycananalyzequestion,too.Theyareneverpassivelistenersbutactiveparticipantsinclass.Toimprovestudents'englishofspeakingandlistening,firstly,weshallhelpthemtogetinterestedinenglish.secondly,speakingenglishalsoneedstospeakloudly.don'tbeshytospeak.pleasespeakup.tryyourbesttoopenyourmouse.teachersalsoneedtohaveconfidenceinstudentesandtellthemthattheyarethebest.thirdly,listeningisahardjob.butwehadbetterlistengmanyenglishtapes,suchascrazyenglish.onlyiflistenenoughwillyouhaveabilitiestolistenwel.3.ThereasonwhystudentarepooratspokenEnglish3.1FactorofthestudentthemselvesThestudentlackthemotioninEnglish,someofthestudentdonotliketheEnglishtheyfeeltheEnglishisveryboring.AndtheirEnglishisnotwell,too.WhenstudentsspeakEnglishisnotsuremyselfforit.ThestudentslackinterestofspokenEnglish.InordertoimprovespokenEnglish,studenthavetobearsomanyphoneticsymbols,wordsandphasesinmindandhavetolearnidiomandsentencepatternbyheart.Sotheymustspendalotoftimeinremembering,whichmakespokenEnglishdifficult.Astimegoesbytheylostinterestandself-confidenttopracticeit.3.2FactoroftheteacherBecauseateachercannotlookateverygroupatthesametime,somestudentswillusetheirnativelanguage,whichisalwaysabigproblemingroupwork.“Themostimportantfactor,however,issettingtheclimateforgroupwork.First,impressuponstudentstheimportanceofpracticeinthesecondlanguageforeventualsuccess.8
