3、dy’sfirsttragicnovelinwhichthecharacters’fatesarecloselyrelatedtothenaturalenvironment.Asanature-lover,ThomasHardyfrequentlyexpresseshisdeepconcerntowardsnatureinthisnovelandappealstoconstructaharmoniousrelationshipbetweenmanandnature.HisecologicalthoughtsembodiedinTheRe

4、turnoftheNativeareinaccordancewiththeideasofecocriticism.Toputitbriefly,ecocriticismisanewly-emergedliterarycriticismconcerningtherelationshipbetweenmanandnatureinliteraryworks.Theintrinsicvalueofnatureandecologicalholismareitscoreconcepts.Thistheoryarguesfortheintrinsic

5、valueofnature,regardsbothmanandnatureastheindispensablecomponentsofthewholeecologicalsystem,maintainingthatbothenjoythesamerightsandhavethesamestatus.Namely,manandnatureareintegratedtogetherinoneeco-system.Thus,onecannotseparatehimselffromthenaturalenvironment.Thisthesis

6、istoemploythetheoryofecocriticismtointerpretTheReturnoftheNative.BesidestheIntroductionandConclusionparts,themainbodyofthisthesisfallsintofourchapters.Inthefirstchapter,thethesissortsoutpreviousstudiesofthisnovelbothathomeandabroad.Thesecondchaptergivesanoverviewofthethe
