1、HermanMelvilleMELVILLE'SLIFEHermanMelvillewasborninNewYorkCityonAugust1,1819,toAllanMelvill(ashisfatherspelledhisname)andMariaGansevoortMelvill.Bothsidesofthefamilywerequitewelloff,andcouldevenbecalled"aristocratic"inasense;hisfathercamefromalineofsuccessfulmerchants,andhismotherfromHudsonValle
2、ylandholders.Hischildhoodwasasecureandcomfortableone,buthisfortuneschangedin1830,whenhisfathersufferedseriousbusinesslosses.InJanuary,1832,AllanMelvilldied,mentallyandphysicallyexhausted.Melvillehadidolizedhisfather,andhisdeathwasaprofoundshock.Forseveralyearsthereafter,thefamilywasinafinancial
