3、er2004;infinalform30December2004)AbstractThisstudyisaimedtodevelopanovelnoncontactultrasonicindentationsystemformeasuringquantitativemechanicalpropertiesofsofttissues,whichareincreasinglyimportantfortissueassessmentandcharacterization.Thekeyideaofthismethodi
4、stouseawaterjetasanindentertocompressthesofttissuewhileatthesametimeasamediumforanultrasoundbeamtopropagatethrough.Theuseofwaterjetindentationdoesnotrequirearigidcompressorinfrontofthefocusedhighfrequencyultrasoundtransducertocompressthetissue,sothattheaddi
5、tionalattenuationcausedbytherigidcompressorandthestrongechoesreflectedfromitssurfacescanbeavoided.Theindentationdeformationwasestimatedfromtheultrasoundechoesusingacross-correlationalgorithmandtheindentationforcewascalculatedfromthewaterpressuremeasuredinsid
6、ethewaterpipe.Experimentswereperformedonuniformtissue-mimickingphantomswithdifferentstiffness.TheYoungsmoduliandPoissonsratiosofthesephantomsweremeasuredusingauniaxialultrasoundcompressionsystem.Theratiooftheindentationpressuretothetissuerelativedeformation
7、wasobtainedfromthewaterindentation.ThisratiowaswellcorrelatedwiththeYoungsmodulus(r0.87).Theresultsalsodemonstratedthatthewaterindentationapproachcoulddifferentiatematerialswithdifferentstiffnessinacombinedphantom(288kPaand433kPa).Thisnovelnoncontactwateri
