3、ticulardesireintoauniversalhumanaspirationworthyofthestrongestprotection.Asacommittedandpreciselyforthisreasonuneasybelieverinlibertyrightsor,moreprecisely,inmanyofthethingslibertyrightsaresupposedtomakepossible,I wanttoseehowwelllibertyrightsliveuptothesetwoambitionsandwhatlessonswec

4、andrawiftheyfallshort.Byconsideringlibertyrightsintheirdoubleidentity,I hopeespeciallytoarriveatacriticalappraisaloflibertyrightsashumanrightsthatwouldbedifficulttoreachbyattendingtolibertyrightsashumanrights alone.I.LibertyRightsasHuman RightsItseemsappropriatetostartfromwhatstrikesm

5、easadeepcontradictioninthecon-ceptofhumanrights,especiallylibertyrightsasasubsetofhumanrights.Thecon-tradictionliesbetweentheuniversalismandsupposedminimalismofhumanrights,ontheonehand,andthefactthathumanrights—againI haveinmindlibertyrightsinparticular—arenotnecessaryconditionsforhum
