2、owstarttotheextentthathetaughthimselfadvancedcalculusandgeometryfromtextbooks.Bythenheknewwhathewantedtobewhenhegrewup.Hewantedtobeaphysicistanddevotehimselftoresearch.TheEinsteins,however,couldnotaffordtopayfortheadvancededucationthatyoungAlbertneeded.Thefamilybusinesshaddeclined,andt
3、heywereforcedtoleaveMunichtoliveinMilan,Italy,wheretheyhadrelatives.AsforAlbert,thefamilydidmanagetosendhimtoatechnicalschoolinAarau,Switzerland,andlatertotheFederalInstituteofTechnologyinZurich.In1901,whenEinsteinwastwenty-twoyearsold,hebeganteaching,andin1902hewenttoworkasapatentoffi
4、ceexaminerinBern.Nowabletopayhisownexpenses,hecontinuedhisschoolingattheUniversityofZurich,wherehereceivedadoctor’sdegreein1905,ThiswastheperiodwhenhebegantheresearchwhichresultedinthecreationofhisfamousTheoryofRelativity.TomostpeopleitisnoteasytoexplainwhyEinstein’stheoryeventuallysho
5、okthewholescientificandintellectualworld.Butbecauseofit,scientistsneveragainregardedtheworldastheyhadbefore.Basically,thetheoryproposed,amongotherthings,thatthemaximumspeedpossibleintheuniverseisthatoflight;thatmassappearstoincreasewithspeed;thattherateofaclockmovingthroughspacewilldec
6、reaseasitsspeedincreases;andthatenergyandmassareequalandinterchangeable.Thislatterclaim,basedontheformulaE=mc2(energyequalsmasstimesthesquareofthespeedoflight)waslaterprovedbyatomicfission,onwhichtheatomicbombisbased.Laterinlife,whenEinsteinwasaskedtoexplainhislawofrelativitytoagroupof
7、youngstudents,hesaid:“Whenyousitwithanicegirlfortwohours,youthinkit’sonlyaminute.Butwhenyousitonahotstoveforaminute,youthinkit’stwohours.Thatisrelativity.”Einsteinhadaneffectonscienceandhistorythatonlyafewmenhaveeverachieved.AnAmericanuniversitypresidentcommentedin1929that“Einsteinha
