BS4449:2005+A2:2009ForewordThisBritishStandardhasbeenpreparedbySubcommitteeISE/9/1.BS4449:2005+A2:2009supersedesBS4449:2005+A1:2007,whichiswithdrawn.Thiseditionincorporatesafullrevisionofthestandard.Thecharacteristicyieldstrengthhasbeenincreasedto500MPa,andathirdductilityclasshasbeenadded,comparedtoBS4449:1997.ThestartandfinishoftextintroducedbyAmendmentNo.1andNo.2isindicatedinthetextbytags!"and#$.Thisstandardnolongercoversplainroundbar.Forsizesuptoandincluding12mmincoil,plainroundwireofgrade250MPahasbeenincorporatedintoBS4482.Forlargersizes,fordowelbarapplications,referenceshouldbemadetoBSEN10025-1.Fordowelbarsforuseinconcretepavements,referenceshouldbemadetoBSEN13877-3.ThisstandardhasbeenwrittensothatitcanbeusedinconjunctionwithBSEN10080:2005.Definitions,symbols,steelmakingandmanufacturingprocesses,routineinspectionandtesting,testmethods,identificationofthemanufacturerandtechnicalclassandverificationofmechanicalpropertiesinthecaseofdisputearealltakenfromBSEN10080:2005.BSEN10080:2005doesnotdefinesteelgradesortechnicalclasses,andrequiresthattechnicalclassesshouldbedefinedinaccordancewithBSEN10080:2005,byspecifiedvaluesofRe,Rm/Re,Agt,Re,act/Re,nom(whereappropriate),fatiguestrength,bendperformance,weldability,bondstrength,tolerancesanddimensions.ThethreesteelgradesinthisstandardconformtoalloftherequirementsofBSEN10080:2005.ThethreegradesinthisstandardalsoconformtothethreerecommendedductilityclassesofBSEN1992-1-1:2004,althoughthefatiguerequirementsandthefatiguetestconditionsareretainedfromthepreviousversionofthisstandard.TheonlyexceptiontothisisforgradeB500Ainsizesbelow8mm,wheretheductilityrequirementsspecifiedarebelowthoseofBSEN1992-1-1:2004.!Inthepreviousrevisionofthisstandard,bondwasspecifiedbymeansofaprojectedribarea,withapull-outtestspecifiedasanalternativemeansofdemonstratingcompliancewiththebondrequirementsofBS8110-1.Inthisrevision,bondisspecifiedbymeansofarelativeribarea.Asanalternative,abeamtestisprovidedinAnnexA,whichmaybeusedtodemonstratecompliancewithEurocode2.WhereanalternativebondtestisrequiredtodemonstratecompliancewithBS8110-1,thenthepull-outtestmaybeused.Thispull-outtestalternativemayonlybeappliedtosteelsofgradeB500A."BSEN10080:2005containsaninformativeAnnexZA,whichdescribeshowthatstandardcanbeusedforthepurposesofCEmarkingofreinforcingsteels.AnnexZAand8.2,8.3and8.4ofBSEN10080:2005relatetotheroleofthenotifiedbodyinassessingproductsforanECcertificateofconformity,andassucharenotincludedinthisstandard.ItisnotarequirementofthisBritishStandardthatmaterialsproducedtoitshouldmeettherequirementsforCEmarking.WhereCEmarkingisrequiredforthepurposesofcomplyingwiththeEUConstructionProductsDirective,BSEN10080:2005applies.Itisrecommendedthatpurchasersspecifyreinforcingsteelthathasbeenmanufacturedandsuppliedtoarecognizedthirdpartyproductcertificationscheme.8.2specifiesthedeterminationofthelongtermqualitylevelundersuchascheme.Asanalternative,AnnexBprovidesabatchtestingmethodformaterialwhichhasnotbeenproducedundersuchascheme.InBSEN10080,theterms“rod”and“wire”areusedtodescribereinforcingsteelincoil.Inthisstandard,thesetermshavenotbeenincludedtoavoidthepotentialforconfusion,particularlywithwireproducedtoBS4482.Thisstandardcomesintoeffecton1January2006.ii©BSI2009
