4、ndsetsailforLiverpoolEngland.In1840,MelvillesetsailaboardtheAcushnet,awhalingshipheadedfortheSouthPacific.TheroughconditionsoftheseatoughenedtheromanticNewEnglanderandhetooksuchalikingtosealifethathesailedaroundtheglobefouryearsaboardvariousships.Melville
5、waswelcomedhomebyhisfamilywhowasentertainedbyhistalesofthehighseasandencouragedhimtowritethemdown.HermanwroteTypeequicklyin1845,andpublisheditthenextyear.Typeebecameacriticalandfinancialsuccessin1847,MelvillemarriedElizabethShaw,daughteroftheChiefJusticeo
6、fMassachusetts.Tomakehimselfmorefinanciallystableforhisimpendingmarriage,MelvillesoughtapositionwiththeU.S.Treasuryandtookonextraworkwritingbookreviews.MobyDickpublishedinNovember1851,receivedpoorreviewsanddidnotsell.Despitethiscontinuedoutputandthefacthi
7、searliernovelscontinuedtobereprintedandsoldfairlywell,Melville'sliteraryreputationwasinrapiddecline.HisdeathfromaheartattackonSeptember28,1891wententirelyunheededbythegeneralpublic.Melville'sliteraryreputationremainedindeclineuntilhewasrediscoveredinthe19
